MET (Metabolic Equivalent)

A unit measuring the energy cost of physical activity relative to resting.

1 MET equals the energy expenditure at rest (approximately 3.5 ml of oxygen per kg of body weight per minute). Walking is about 3 METs, jogging 7 METs, running 10 METs, and sprinting 15+ METs. To calculate calories burned: METs × body weight in kg × hours. A 70 kg person jogging (7 METs) for 1 hour burns 7 × 70 × 1 = 490 calories. MET values are published by the Compendium of Physical Activities and used in most calorie calculators.
